我们会记得你|WE WILL REMEMBER YOU

A blanket may seem like a simple thing

It has been 18 years since my great-grandmother passed on. I barely knew her as I was only seven at the time of her passing and I did not speak the dialect of the Chinese language she communicated with.

However, I still feel the love she had for me whenever I go to bed wrapped in the blanket she gave me. In fact, almost every single child, grandchild, and great-grandchild of hers was gifted a blanket.

Don’t be mistaken, these are no ordinary blankets. Each one had been intricately hand-stitched and designed by her. She employed a self-taught patchwork technique by putting together scraps of fabric from old clothing, bedsheets, and pillowcases to create a whole new form of beauty that’s indescribable. Although many of these blankets have fallen apart from being used over the years, some of them still remain, carefully folded and placed in zip lock bags, tucked away in the safest corners of their owner’s cupboards where they remain as prized family heirlooms.

我们会记得你/We Will Remember You showcases the surviving blankets alongside three generations of my extended family members, spanning over 60 years of history. Some of the blankets have long been outgrown, and others have faded far from their original colours. Just like their owners, they have changed throughout the years alongside them. They are presented as is, rips and wrinkles, holes and pimples. After you look at the blankets and the emotions they invoke in my family members, I implore you to look around at the fabrics you own now and ask yourself - how many of them actually mean anything to you?
